Avoid cutting and burning, let's protect our beautiful Archipelago!
San Andres Island, October 12, 2023. Friends of these lands blessed by nature, the Corporation for the Sustainable Development of the Archipelago of San Andres, Providence and Saint Kethleena - CORALINA reminds you of the importance of caring for and preserving our natural resources. In particular, we wish to sensitize everyone about the critical situation of cutting and burning. The beauty of our islands depends on its biodiversity and lush vegetation, so it is essential that we take action to prevent its degradation, remembering that the land is for many of our farmers a source of food and economy, and therefore requires its preservation.
Indiscriminate felling and burning affects not only the flora and fauna of our islands, but also the quality of the air we breathe and the well-being of future generations. Every tree cut down and every space burned destroys a piece of our paradise. We must be aware of the serious consequences of these actions and commit to changing our habits. Here are some powerful reasons to avoid cutting and burning in our rural areas:
1. To preserve biodiversity: Our islands are home to unique species found nowhere else in the world. Every tree is a treasure that we must protect.
2. To mitigate climate change: Forests and vegetation capture carbon and help regulate the climate. Their destruction contributes to climate change and its devastating impacts.
3. To maintain air and water quality: Cutting and burning destroy the green lungs of our islands, affecting air quality and water availability.
4. To promote sustainable tourism: Tourism is an important source of income in our islands. A healthy natural environment attracts visitors and ensures long-term prosperity.
5. To Protect our culture and heritage: Our customs and traditions are closely linked to nature. To preserve it is to preserve our identity.
Let us make a call to consciousness and responsibility. Let's promote reforestation, sustainable agriculture and environmental education. Every little effort counts and can make a difference. Let us remember that these islands are a priceless gift that we must preserve for generations to come.
